National Badminton Championships

A big shout out to Coach Johnna Rymes for her recent performance at the Sr. National Badminton Championships this past weekend!  Johnna finished in fourth place in the Women’s Doubles event!

Way to go!

Johnna is also competing in the U23 Category for Women’s Singles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles, which continues to take place at Millienium Place, Sherwood Park from July 7-10.  For more information on schedule and draws, please visit: www.thenationals.ca

A special congratulations to our young member, Darren Wu who won the u11 Boy’s Singles Consolation Draw at his first Jr. National Championships held this past weekend at Millenium Place in Sherwood Park.

Well done Darren!

A special shout out to Abby Ledda who also competed at the Sr. National Championships in Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.  After a very successful Competitive Season playing for King’s University and finishing with a Women’s Doubles Silver Medal at the National College/University Badminton Championships, it is great to see Abby Ledda back on the competitive circuit!

Congratulations also goes to our Head Badminton Coach, Val Loker who competed in the Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles Events at the Senior National Championships for the first time after 10 years!  After some great 3 games battles and 7 matches over the course of 4 days, Coach Val managed to make the consolation Mixed Doubles final before losing to another one of our top mixed teams in Alberta. Val partnered with her former roommate and fellow Olympian from the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Anna Rice in Women’s Doubles and one of the top Alberta male athletes, Andy Ko for Mixed Doubles. It was a great opportunity to get out on the courts and play some great matches, while staying injury free! Coach Val is on a mission to show that we are all still capable of many challenging feats at any age.

Coach Val was also awarded the female Fair Play Award for the Senior National Championships.

Best of luck to our members who are competing in the u17, u19 and u23 National Badminton Championships that continue on from July 7-10 at Millenium Place, Sherwood Park.   For schedule and results visit: www.thenationals.ca

Many thanks to Badminton Alberta, Badminton Canada, and all the referees, umpires and volunteers for all your time and efforts in making this a very successful event!  It is great to see the badminton community come together from across the country and have the opportunity to showcase our best Senior, Para and up and coming Junior athletes here in Alberta.

We look forward to seeing many more great competitions and events come this way in the future!
